Discuss the similarities and differences in the species’ range, habitats, and threats, and why researchers are studying both populations. Your students can use the online Whooping Crane and Siberian Crane fact sheets to complete the worksheet.

  • Updates from the Field (Spring 2008)

The six-unit series focuses on the regions where our project sites are located in east Asia. Each unit includes background information on the geography, people and conservation issues along the flyway. The units begin in southeastern China and follow the east Asia flyway north through China and Russia. A fact sheet and PowerPoint presentation will be developed for each unit to help you bring the stories of these regions into your classroom. These weekly field updates from our researchers in Russia, China and the United States follow the yearly cycle of the Siberian Crane, beginning on the population's breeding grounds in northeastern Russia and following their migration route south through eastern China. Through these updates, students will learn first hand about field research and explore why this research is important for conserving cranes and many other wildlife species in east Asia. With each field update, a short activity or questions are suggested to lead student discussion of the update topic. The student activities focus on the geography of east Asia, crane biology, Siberian Crane conservation, study research methods, and the people of east Asia.
