Discussion: Changing Landscapes

1. In "Inner Mongolia: Landscape and People of the Steppes" Jim notes that much has changed near Keerqin Nature Reserve since his last visit to this area 15 years ago. Read Jim's description of his visit to Inner Mongolia and list the changes that he observed. As a class, discuss Jim's observations and how you think these changes will affect the region’s cranes and other wildlife?

2. Jim describes how students at both Xianghai Primary School and Zhalong Middle School are learning about cranes along the east Asia flyway (click on the links below to read about his visits to these schools). Based on these descriptions, list three reasons for why cranes are threatened along the flyway and what the students and their families can do to help. How is this similar to wildlife conservation in the United States and your role in protecting cranes and other wildlife?
