For migrating birds such as the Whooping Crane, these areas protect wetland and grassland habitats that link the birds’ summering and wintering areas. In addition to migrating birds and other wildlife, thousands of people each year visit these wildlife areas to go camping, hiking, canoeing, bird watching, and, in some areas, hunt and fish. Area residents volunteer to lead hikes, control invasive plant or animal species, or clear brush from trails within the reserves. We encourage you to learn more about your local reserves and to plan a visit to a nearby refuge – if you are lucky, you might even see a Whooping Crane!
