Sauk Prairie Middle School
Christie Nelson's 6th grade class at Sauk Prairie Middle School in Sauk City, Wisconsin hosted two Chinese educators, Zhang Juan and Hu Yabin, during their visit to Wisconsin in February 2008. Zhang Juan (right) gave a presentation on the cranes of China and shared information about students in China with the class.
In 2006 several of Mrs. Nelson's students (then students at Tower Rock Elementary School) designed and sold a set of note cards focusing on endangered birds. The students donated the profits from their project to the International Crane Foundation (ICF), who gave a portion of the gift to Xianghai Middle School in Jilin Province, China (learn more about this project).
Inspired by the Wisconsin students, Xianghai Middle School designed a set of note cards focusing on the cranes and wetlands near their home. Jim Harris, ICF's Vice President, brought the cards to Sauk Prairie Middle School in fall 2007, sharing how the Xianghai school is using the donation to support their art program. The Sauk Prairie students hope to continue this exchange by becoming pen pals with the Xianghai students!
