Red-crowned Crane Fact Sheet
Fun fact: Scientists in China have found 7,000 - 9,000 year old flutes made from Red-crowned Crane wing bones.

Range: East Asia
Habitat: wetlands/grasslands
Food: tubers (starchy swellings on the roots of plants), insects, seeds, small mammals and reptiles, crayfish
Height: Similar to Whooping and Siberian Cranes, Red-crowned Cranes average about 5 feet (150 cm) tall. Red-crowned Cranes are the heaviest crane species, weighing up to 25 pounds (11 kg).
Threats: Red-crowned Crane populations along the East Asia flyway are severely threatened, primarily by habitat loss. Continued agricultural and industrial development affects breeding areas in northeastern China and southeastern Russia, as well as wintering areas in coastal Jiangsu Province, China.
