Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge
Over 50,000 migrating Sandhill Cranes stop at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge in southeastern Tennessee during their fall migration. The reserve is also a stopping point along the ultralight-led Whooping Crane migration along the eastern flyway. In recent years, growing numbers of Sandhill Cranes, along with small numbers of Whooping Cranes, have wintered at the refuge. The refuge is located at the meeting of the Hiwassee and Tennessee Rivers.
