Three White Cranes: Connecting Cranes and People

The Whooping Crane is the rarest species of crane (there are less than 500 alive today!), but it is also a symbol of conservation success in North America. The species almost became extinct nearly 100 years ago, but today Whooping Cranes are increasing in numbers and are returning to areas where they once lived in the United States.
Red-crowned Cranes are important symbols throughout Asian culture, representing long life, good fortune and fidelity. This endangered species relies upon remaining wetlands in northeastern China, a region that is rapidly changing due to development and climate change.
Although there are about 3,500 Siberian Cranes, conservationists classify this species as Critically Endangered. The species has nearly disappeared from its range in central and western Asia, while the fate of the eastern population along the East Asia flyway is uncertain.
