Aldan River Clean up
Rudolf Baryshev,
Ust-Maya Inspection of Nature Protection, Ust-Maya Ulus, Yakutia, Russia
Students in Ust Maya are very interested in learning about the work of local Nature Inspectors. Seven classes were gathered together for a meeting with the head of the Ust-Maya Inspection of Nature Protection (UINP), Rudolf Baryshev. As a result of this meeting, a group of students went to the Aldan River bank in May 2008 for a subbotnik (a day of voluntary labor) organized by UINP. A lot of garbage had accumulated during the winter along the Aldan River bank, which is an important feeding and rest area for migratory birds. Fifteen students from the local Ecological Club, with two teachers and three UINP staff, participated in the river clean-up.
This activity is part of a larger republic-wide environmental education initiative in Yakutia titled “Nature and Us”. Through this larger initiative, UINP, with the support of the student Ecological Club, is working with a local TV station to create a new nature education program, “Ecological Herald,” to help expand their outreach about nature education to local residents.
