Kytalyk Resource Reserve

Kytalyk (pronounced Keytalick in English) means “Siberian Crane” in the Yakutian language. The Kytalyk Resource Reserve protects Siberian Crane breeding grounds in Yakutia in northeastern Russia. The tundra region has many lakes, and many rivers and brooks. Siberian cranes like to build their nests near the lakes, sometimes between two lakes, in wet parts of the tundra. You need to use special long waders if you want to walk in the tundra. In the summer you may see Siberian Cranes with their chicks, and also Lesser Sandhill Cranes, or Whooper Swans - the biggest birds in tundra - many loons, and very beautiful Rose Gulls with bright rosy feathers.

The most beautiful time on the tundra is the spring, when there are many flowers and not so many mosquitoes!

You can find mammoth bones in Kytalyk, or visit Kusaghan Mastakh (“Bad Trees” in Yakutian), an old-growth larch forest.
