Crane Art in Yakutsk

Conservationists in Yakutia are working with local artists to develop sculptures and paintings of Siberian Cranes to exhibit in the capital of Yakutia and other villages. The art is installed in prominent locations, such as bus terminals, the regional hospital, and local museums, and includes information panels on Siberian Cranes. The project was designed to increase public awareness of cranes and their conservation through the Siberian Crane Wetland Project, a multi-national project involving researchers in Russia, China and the US (click here for more information on this project and Siberian Crane conservation).

The art is popular among local residents, including students. In 2007-2008 the city of Yakutsk will place another Siberian Crane sculpture in one of the central city squares, the City Amusement Park and Zoological Park Orto-Doidu. Following are images of three pieces in the public art exhibit, which have been on display in Yakutsk since 2004.
